2020 marks the 10th anniversary of Joss Arnott Dance. Over the year we had a number of events planned, including the re-tour of PULSE! our dance and live music outdoor experience and the premiere of a new triple bill evening of work, set to tour across the UK. PULSE! was originally inspired by Artistic Director Joss Arnott’s fascination with how as people we create a series of pulses that unify us and make up our interactions in life.
Created in 2019, PULSE! explores how a dancer, musician and a bespoke percussion wheel structure can begin to create a unified pulse, existing independently but as part of a larger social pulse.
Our needs, priorities and values have changed drastically due to COVID-19. We are currently living in uncertain times, unknown territories within new parameters and now more than ever before are craving connections and a chance to share moments with our loved ones and communities. With that in mind and through the support of Arts Council England Emergency Funding, we developed a new PULSE! – DANCE:CONNECTS – PULSE! 2.0.
What is DANCE:CONNECTS – PULSE! 2.0?
DANCE:CONNECTS is a choreographic response to PULSE!, originally inspired by Artistic Director Joss Arnott’s fascination with how as humans we create a series of connections that unite us through movement and music.
DANCE:CONNECTS aims to build on the connections made between local, regional and national communities in these times of transformation change and is inspired by the need for society to continue that connection in our new world.
The response celebrates those new connections, empowering dancers, children, families and communities to create a social connection through movement, culminating in an isolation digital flash mob that took place on Thursday 2nd July 2020, 19:30 (GMT).
Choreographed by Artistic Director Joss Arnott, we were able to;
– Work with and financially support 23 independent professional dance artists
– Work with schools, community groups, education institutes and training programmes to offer a chance to connect people locally, nationally and internationally during the current times of isolation.
– Offer digital dance and engagement opportunities via our Learn at Home video tutorials, that also allow families and people in Isolation to take part and learn, in their own time and space.
– Create accessible, captioned and British Sign Language video content for our audiences.
The mass isolation online flash mob took take place on Thursday 2nd July 2020, 19:30 (GMT) with hundreds of people across the UK and overseas engaging with the activity.
Each participant was invited to go live under the #JADPULSE hashtag or record themselves performing the choreography and post their video. We then asked all participants to send us a recording or section of the performance to curate a DANCE:CONNECTS – PULSE! 2.0 video, mapping everyone’s performances and celebrating our connection.
The two dance films will go live on THURSDAY 30TH JULY 2020 and THURSDAY 6TH AUGUST 2020.
